10th November, Saturday

Large Munsterlander Novice Field Trial
Judges: Keith Scattergood & Helen Evans

They were short of runners and as the trial is only in Westerham in Kent it doesn't take too long to get there. I thought it would be nice to give Jaz a run. There are 10 runners, and I think she stands a good chance.
The day was fairly bright, with some cloud and about average temperature for this time of year. I am running No 10 (last). It would have been so much better if we were running first, but I'm going to stay relaxed so hopefully this will wear off on Jaz.
Most of the runners before me had been working hedges (and ditches) and a few birds had been flushed which had been shot. Quite a few people have all had retrieves, and by the time it was my run all the rest of the runners were still in.
I cast Jaz off, and she was really hyper, I tried to keep her close, but she was just out there to find birds. She soon came on point, and the judges really admired her fast work and stylish point. We walked up to her and I put her in to flush but the bird ran instead of flying. She chased after it and I blew the stop whistle but she didn't stop. The bird did get up, and a shot was fired but I think missed. (I'm pretty sure Jaz went to see if the bird had come down but she was out of sight by now.) I got her back to me and cast her off again and another bird got up and was shot and she ran in again. She was just so hyper. However, she didn't see were the bird came down and it ran so she never got the retrieve, and we were out.
I am really disappointed. She gets so excited at any bird work. I thought she might have calmed down by now, and she isn't that fit as she only stopped feeding her puppies a couple of weeks ago.
Well..... that's dogs for you.

The judges gave out a 2nd to Karen with her Munsterlander, 3rd to Julie (her first trial with her GSP), a 4th to Trevor with his Vizsla, and a CofM to a weimaraner.
