29th June, Friday

Jaz

Took her to see the Jack (stud dog) again today. Today is day 16/17.

She did seem quite keen when we arrived but still didn't stand and I did just have to hold/steady her. It did seem a better mating and it was a longer tie. Pic of Jack when both dogs were running at a trial a couple of years ago.

Just hope I got the dates right. Won't really know for a month to see if she starts to show.

28th June, Thursday

Well, June has been the wettest on record. There are terrible floods in the North of England, and summer seems to have been forgotten.

Today, there was only 1 of the fawns with her mum in Chloe's field this morning. I would think the other fawn must be dead which is such a shame as I have watched this little family grow up. Only a few days ago both fawns were running around although they still looked tiny.
Today, the remaining fawn has changed her coat, much more the solid brown of a roe, and all the speckles have gone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chloe will go for her jumping session later, she went quite well last week, so a repeat performance would be nice!

27th June, Wednesday

Jaz
Took her today to the stud dog. Well, I have picked the best working UK Vizsla (with awards that he is won) so can only hope that he was the right one to pick. Unfortunately I don't have much choice as there aren't that many working Vizsla's.
This is now day 14 (maybe 15) and I think that Jaz was ready. Although she wasn't sure, and it took several attempts from the stud dog as he kept missing, after an hour they got it right and they did tie for about 15 minutes.

25th June, Monday

Jaz
I've decided to try and mate her, so have been waiting to take her to the stud dog. It is probably well over 2 hrs drive away so I want to get the date right. Also I have to pay for the first mating, with being allowed a second mating if I wish, and if she is not in welp, then I get a return mating for free. Well for me this is not ideal, firstly Jaz has a long season so I am not sure of the 'optimum' time for mating, and 2, she only comes into season annually so will have paid up front, and will have to wait till next year if she doesn't take!!!
Actually I find the whole thing a bit stressful, and wondered if I shouldn't have just used a local show dog.
Day 10 (or could be 11) was Saturday, and although I had arranged to go, I cancelled. I just didn't think she was ready. Monday (Day 12/13) I took her to the vets for a blood test, and got the results at 5pm and she is 'imminent' (Was that worth £45??) Well I suppose it confirms that I haven't 'missed'.
My vet is very down to earth, and said there wasn't much point having more blood tests, as they were only a guide and not to get too hung up on them. If it was going to happen it would.
So I think I will take her to the stud on Wednesday (Day 14/15) and just hope for the best.

11th April, Sunday

GWT Bracco Italiano Society
Ashdown Forest

Hazel - In season at home
Rusty - entered in Open
Jaz - entered in Novice and Open

Open Test
1 Blind, across a lake and 25 yds the other side is a dummy. Shot fired this side of the lake over to the left hand side!!! (why!!? - this just made another distraction)

(The hard part about this was that you were stood about 20 yards back from the lake in the wood so you couldn't see your dog, so therefore you couldn't handle the dog. A lot of dogs struggled with this, mainly because as soon as they got to the lake they were following the path around the lake instead of going straight over.)
Both Jaz and Rusty went into the lake but because they couldn't see me, both swam around and then returned. I moved forward a little and sent them and they both did it perfectly (just because I could encourage them across it was amazing what a difference this made.) However, because I moved forward I lost probably over half the marks. I was pleased with Jaz, this was really hard for her.

2. Very long blind with a shot fired. Every dog failed. (and there were some decent Open dogs in this class.)

3. Long blind, (no shot or mark) for a pigeon.
This was hard as although the dog was in sight it had a really touch time getting to the pigeon as the area was covered in scrub, fallen trees, and a brook ran through the middle. The dogs really had to fight/pick their way through.
Rusty and Jaz both did it perfectly. Really pleased with them both, and I wondered if Jaz might be funny with the pigeon but she picked it straight away.
This was a long blind for Jaz so really pleased.

4. Split. Seen in water, blind about 70 yds up the hill, in cover.

Rusty did it perfectly, Jaz got about half way with the blind and then started hunting so I had to move forward a little so again lost loads of marks.

Result: Jaz beat Rusty!!! (by 1 mark.) Jaz 7th, Rusty 8th so not too bad.

Novice.
1. A shot fired to the left on the track at the top. Send the dog up a track to another track at the top (T). Stop dog. Send to the right. Dummy in cover at side of the track.

Jaz completly fluffed this one. She was so fast up the track that by the time I had blown the whistle she was sat almost round to the left, and this was the only place she wanted to go. I actually recalled her and then stopped her again to send her right but she was just totally confused. She actually just sat there looking at me and wouldn't move. I just couldn't get her in the right place and she just completly died on me.

2. Seen with shot fired.
Jaz did it perfectly (19 out of 20)
A lot of dogs messed this up. It is heavy undergrowth and very tall bracken. You really needed a dog to mark it well in the first instance because if they didn't mark it, it was hard to get them in the right area. (there was a stream in the middle to cross as well.)

3. Hunting, with shot fired and dummy thrown (steadiness.)
Jaz did it fine. Hunting could have been a bit better but I don't really care too much about that as she is an amazing hunter when she knows there is game.

4. Water. (Shot fired - dummy thrown in lake.) They actually used the same lake as they did for the Open class this morning, so this was a doddle was Jaz. She got 20 out of 20. Surprisingly most dogs messed this up, but it was a long way across, and many dogs just didn't seem to mark it that well.

Overall I think Jaz was just out of the placings. I felt a bit disappointed about this really as if she hadn't got her knickers in a twist with the split retrieve she would definitely been in the awards. Ridiculous really, when she did so well with the Open retrieves.

Overall though I feel OK about the day. It was lovely weather, and nice to catch up with some people that I haven't seen for ages. (Funny though, I haven't done hardly any tests for a couple of years, and the same people are still there.) Both dogs were really well behaved, Jaz is definitely so much easier now. When she was younger she was such a pain, she couldn't cope with the hanging around and would whine and pull on the lead and generally be a complete pain. So both dogs were a real pleasure to take out.

8th April, Friday

Jaz
Decide I aught to do some dog training as she is entered in a test this weekend so I took her across the fields down to the stream and did a variety of retrieves, mostly blinds, and did quite a few into the water as well. The water is very low now, and the stream quite narrow, so it is just an easy practise for her to swim across and onto the other side, and back and bring it to hand.

She was really good, although I probably made them all too easy for her, but a lot of Jaz's problems are confidence anyway so making everything achievable is really important with her.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sussex is lovely at the moment, the fields are full of wild flowers while the grass is waiting to be made into hay, and the brown meadow butterflies are everywhere. The twin fawns are still about and I distrubed them this morning as they lay in Chloe's field. I guess the mother had left them there whilst she was feeding. They bounded off so I hope they all get reunited soon.

I watched a buzzard circling over the meadow, though not sure what she was searching for, and the bird song is lovely. A couple of swallows are about but nothing like the numbers we had last year, perhaps some more will turn up.

7th June, Thursday

South of England Show.
Went today with a friend who was showing her 3 y old part bred arab, as I was quite interested to see the showing of youngstock. This is something that I have never really had any interest in but I think I might do something with Panache as hopefully it may bode well in later life if she has got used to travelling and shows. Anyway she was 5th so that was good.

The weather this month has been ok but nothing special. Most days are cloudy, and although it isn't cold there is nothing really to write home about.

4th June, Monday

Jaz
Ashdown Forest
Just went for the afternoon's class because still don't feel great.
Did a couple of retrieves with Rusty and Hazel and then had Jaz in the class.

Actually overall all the dogs did great but they all lack real polish. I have entered the GWT on Sunday, and sure I will not have a great day but...... we'll see.

At the end of the day I know Jaz and Hazel need regular training, and Rusty had done too much picking up to really hunt like an HPR should so I'm not expecting too much, but as I haven't been to a test for probably a couple of years now (can't remember if I did any last summer?????) it will be nice to see some old faces.

Panache

Karen came over tonight and we did some training with the foal. After I caught her (and she didn't want to be caught just because someone new was there!!!!!!!) Karen held and stroked her, and then we led Risque and Panache round the field.
Although we probably only spent 15 minutes with Panache she needs this at least once a week. At only 6 weeks old it is amazing how strong she can be.

How do people manage when they turn their foals away for the first 6 months??!!!???

3rd June, Sunday

Well, I've been feeling crap since Thursday, Friday was awful and now there is a bit of improvement.
Chloe
Kent & Surrey Bloodhounds
Hunter Trial - Borde Hill

We are entered to run in the Intermediate Pairs and have decided to go so as not to let Bec's down. Walked the course, and then we went round. Bec's is leading because I still feel a bit crap and she wants to practise from the front. However, at a couple of the harder fences I am meant to overtake so Chloe can give a lead. We did overtake but at the first jump, as B had a stop, so we led through the first water complex, and then I was waiting for B to overtake so wasn't riding that hard and Chloe stopped at the log!!!!!!!! So now B was in the lead. However, I rode pants and had another stop later on on the course so B carried on. At the coffin B's horse refused and she fell off, but fortunately they were fine so remounted and then followed me over, and Chloe just popped over like a pro, but it was just one of those days, where if it was going to go wrong it went wrong.

Oh well.......... can't win them all!!!!!!!!!

31st May, Thursday

Chloe
Gridwork training lesson.
Chloe went really well, until the last grid with the parallel put up a couple of holes, and she stopped and I fell off. This is the first time I've fallen off for ages and was not impressed.
I was trying not to override into the fences and this is what happens!! Next time round made sure I really kicked on and she flew it.
It is hard to get the combination of good rhythm and sitting quiet and knowing when to kick on and ride.

Oh well practise makes perfect!!??
